Letter From Dad

(from page 3 of WWP)

To My Children:

You were born into a fiercely competitive family. You know how competitive I am. I love sports and competition. I love training and working out. I know this makes me a very intense dad and that sometimes this intensity spills over into your sport. Your mother, the reasonable member of the family, is a very competitive recreational tennis player. She will review important points in a match in her head. She will figure out what she needs to work on. She will practice and practice to improve her tennis game.

While your mother and I compete against other people, we focus on our own skills. We play games where there are winners and losers, but the final score is not how we measure our success. We compete with ourselves. We both have an intense desire to improve our performance. This competitive spirit has been passed on to you.

Passing on the competitive spirit is not enough; you need an owner’s manual to go with it. I wish I had one to give you, but each of you have to build your own. The good news is you don’t have to do this alone. I am writing this book to pass on to you the wisdom given to me by my parents, my coaches, and my teachers.

Love,

Dad
